Where to sail

Itineraries from Cagliari

Two suggested routes for a week aboard, one heading west and one heading east. They are inspiration, not fixed stops: bareboat, you are in command and decide every morning where to drop anchor.

West route

Carloforte & the island of San Pietro

Heading south-west, among ancient towns, protected dunes and the Tabarchino island of Carloforte. A week of sheltered coves and sunsets over the open sea.

Nora

The ancient Phoenician-Roman town facing the sea, with columns, baths and an amphitheatre a few steps from the shore.

Chia

A Spanish tower, juniper-covered dunes and lagoons where flamingos gather: one of the most beautiful coasts in the south.

Tuerredda

White sand and emerald water, with a tiny islet a few strokes from the shore. A picture-perfect bay for anchoring.

Porto Pino

The great white dunes of the protected oasis and shallow, crystal-clear waters: a wide bay, ideal for a quiet stop.

Sant'Antioco

The island joined to the mainland by an ancient isthmus, with its Phoenician Tophet and old fishing villages.

Carloforte

The island of San Pietro and its Tabarchino soul: colourful alleys, home of bluefin tuna and Ligurian–North African cuisine.

East route

Villasimius, Ogliastra & the Red Rocks

Heading north-east, from the Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area to the Red Rocks of Arbatax. Crystal-clear waters, long beaches and the most authentic Ogliastra.

~152 nm ~1 week Round trip from Cagliari

Geremeas & Torre delle Stelle

Sheltered coves and granite headlands just east of Cagliari: a natural first leg, with calm water for the first swim.

Villasimius

The Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area and Porto Giunco beach: rich seabeds, perfect for snorkelling and scenic anchorages.

Costa Rei & Cala Pira

Long stretches of pale sand and a coastal tower guarding a tucked-away cove, perfect for a lunch stop.

Cala Sinzias

Pine groves down to the shore and shallow turquoise water: a quiet anchorage between Costa Rei and Capo Ferrato.

Arbatax

The famous Red Rocks of porphyry rising from the sea and the Trenino Verde station, gateway to the wildest Ogliastra.

A week of flavours

Part of the joy of a catamaran holiday is the galley: shopping in the harbours, fish bought at the market, dinner cooked at sunset. Here is what a week of dining aboard Violante might look like — an idea to make your own.

Sardinian cellar

Fresh Vermentino di Gallura for aperitivi, Cannonau for fish dinners and grilled meat.

Pantry

Sardinian pecorino, extra-virgin olive oil, friselle and pane carasau, pasta, preserves and nuts for the long legs.

Fresh in port

Fish and shellfish at the Carloforte market, seasonal vegetables, fruit and fresh cheese picked up stop after stop.

On board

Breakfasts in the cockpit and dinners on the plancha: the gas barbecue is included, to grill with your feet almost in the water.
